Five Reasons to see the Movie Ballerina (Especially if you Homeschool)

Beauty and the Beast has been taking over the box office since it opened. While it does look amazing, and my girls want to see it, I think we might wait till it is available to rent so we can watch it with the lights on and fast forward any frightening scenes. But there is another movie currently in theatres that hasn’t received a lot of promotion but it is totally worth watching, especially if you have young ones that might not be ready for Beauty and the Beast just yet.  My youngest stumbled upon the trailer for Ballerina back in December and had been anxiously awaiting it’s release.  Initially,…

Four Ways to Enjoy Winter in YEG

We’re crawling out of the deep freeze and temperatures are on the rise, maybe only briefly, but I’ll take it for now! Working from home and homeschooling means we have the luxury of staying inside on the coldest of days, but after a few days in, the kids are climbing the walls and cabin fever is setting in. Getting outside and soaking up the Vitamin D is the best thing you can do when the winter blues start to take hold. Here are four fun, family oriented ways to be more active this winter.   Traditional Winter Fun  Skating and sledding are my family’s favorite winter activities.  I’ve never been a…

SCA Fine Arts Presents Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

Strathcona Christian Academy Fine Arts put on a wonderful performance of the Little Mermaid back in February.  The girls and I enjoyed every moment, from the decorations throughout the hall, visits with princesses, and then the show itself!   Stunning singing and great performances took me back to when I was young and rewound my VHS copy of the movie over and over just to hear the songs again. It was a great moment seeing it live with the girls.  This year, SCA Fine Arts will be putting on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,  May 2-5, 2017. Tickets go on sale in the New Year and will be available on…

Our Favorite Sand Free Playgrounds in YEG

Don’t get me wrong, I love sand, but it can stay at the beach.  With the weather cooling down in Edmonton, flip flops, shorts and tank tops are being replaced with sneakers, pants, sweaters and jackets. One of my biggest mommy pet peeves is sand in shoes, clothes, hair, and everywhere else! Plus, back in the spring my daughter had a cast on her foot, so we went in search of sand free playgrounds so she could still play without it affecting her cast. Recycled rubber is becoming the favorite choice when new playgrounds are being built. Here’s a list of our favorite sand free playgrounds in Edmonton. Alberta Ave…

Get Back to Nature: Gold Bar Park Stream

While Gold Bar Park is an amazing place to explore (largest urban park in Canada!), our favorite spot within it is a shallow stream that empties out into the North Saskatchewan River.   We first discovered this fun spot while visiting Rundle Park and saw people along the shore of the river on the other side.  We crossed the pedestrian bridge to Gold Bar Park and followed a narrow path through the trees that came out at the stream. The girls had fun wading in the water, picking up cool rocks and watching the minnows swim by. On our second trip back there was a summer recreation group exploring the…

    Worldschooling From Home

We are homeschoolers, we learn at home instead of in a brick and mortar school. I would also classify us as unschoolers, our lifestyle facilitates child led learning and exploration. Those two terms are becoming more mainstream, but there’s a new group of learners taking the world by storm (quite literally!). Worldschoolers are people that learn from the world around them, and this can be accomplished in many different way.  Some families prefer slow travel and spend many months or years in their new home away from home, some do short trips abroad and return to a home base, or some spend a short amount of time in a new area…

Get Back to Nature: Whitney Lakes Provincial Park

A few weeks ago the girls and I headed out on our first camping trip of the season.  I wanted to go to an area I hadn’t been before, but also one with a place for the girls to splash in the water and try out their new floaties. After some research and a few change of plans, I settled on Ross Lake Campground within Whitney Lakes Provincial Park.   Located 2.5 hrs east of Edmonton (or over 4 hrs when severe rain, hail and thunder storms cause you to pull over several times) in the County of St. Paul, this remote campground offers stunning lake views, private, treed campsites…
